Does Proning position really help to increase oxygen level?
How to effectively do Proning to increase oxygen level?
Oxygen is the most essential part of our life. We cannot live without it, that is a fact we all know. We get this gas from plants and trees.
The second wave of coronavirus hit the world harder than the first one. Resulting in a shortage of oxygen in some countries.
This time this deadly virus has taken India under its deep effect. India is coping up with the situation very crucially.
In these critical situations where there are no beds and oxygen in the hospitals, you have to take care of your health yourself. There is a position for improving oxygen level and breathing comfort, which is medically approved, called Proning Position.
What is the Proning Position?
Proning is a position approved medically. It’s a position in which you lay the patient on their belly to increase the oxygen levels in them.
The proning is being promoted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. These days it is being used as an exercise which has been advised to Covid patients to maintain their oxygen levels.
What is the way to do Proning?
There are three Proning positions that effectively work in increasing oxygen levels.
In the first position, a patient has to lie on their abdomen with three pillows, one under the neck; another one under the belly,
and the third one under the legs above the feet.
In the second position, the patient should lie down on their right and left sides with one same pillow position.
The third one needs to be done by sitting at a 60–90 degrees angle as the fowler position.
One needs to hold on to these positions for at least 30 minutes. It helps and improves the ventilation to the lungs, as a result, oxygen levels start increasing and getting back to normal.
Who can do Proning?
Any patient who does not have these situations can be prone successfully;
- Instability of spines
- New fractures
- Recent and fresh wounds
- Burns
- Pregnancy
- Crucial heart problems
Safety measures while proning
The safety measures of proning are as follows:
- Do not exercise proning until an hour after eating
- Stay in the position as long as one should tolerate it.
- You can adjust the pillows moderately to modify the pressure and comfort
- The room in which the patient is supposed to be should be full of windows to be ventilated properly
- Pressure sores and injuries should not be ignored.
- If the patient can tolerate it, they can be prone for up to 16 hours a day in numerous cycles.
Results after doing proning:
Proning improvises ventilation by keeping the alveolar units open and making them breathe easily.
If you do it timely and maintain good ventilation, it can save many lives with its effects.
Also, it can increase the oxygen levels in the patient’s body and helps them breathe.
Conclusion
Oxygen helps us breathe and makes us able to live in the atmosphere of the Earth. Low oxygen levels in humans can cause death in many cases.
This is why this is very important to maintain the oxygen level in our body.
Proning is the medically approved position to boost the oxygen levels in the body. It is used for patients whose oxygen levels have fallen critically.
Moreover, it helps them boost the oxygen level and helps improve the situation and make it better.
If done timely, it can save the life of the patient very effectively. You just have to follow some safety measures to prevent any defects in the process.
